Visit by a delegation from the Court of Justice of the European Union

A delegation from the Court of Justice of the European Union, led by its president Koen Lenaerts and comprising judges from the Court and the General Court of the European Union, was received in Paris on 13 October 2023 for a working seminar at the Council of State at the invitation of its vice president, Didier-Roland Tabuteau.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the two institutions to reaffirm their desire to strengthen dialogue between national and European judges.

Three subjects of common interest were discussed: environmental protection, the primacy of the direct effect of European Union law and preliminary rulings.

The Court of Justice of the European Union (EUCJ) ensures the uniform interpretation and application of European Union law by the administrations and national courts of the Member States. It rules on legal disputes between the EU institutions and the governments of the Member States or, in certain circumstances, private individuals. National judges may also refer questions to the Court for a preliminary ruling if they have difficulty interpreting a rule of EU law that applies to the disputes they are called upon to resolve, or if they have doubts about the validity of an act of the European Union.
